In the last few years and especially with the onset of the global health crisis, there has been a resurgence of homebuyers moving to the suburbs. The need for more space, privacy, and peace and quiet are the main reasons for the move.

Life outside the urban centers is more relaxed – there is nature to enjoy and a sense of community fostered. In more practical terms, homes tend to be much larger and many communities lie in districts where schools are well rated. But is there an area that ticks all of the boxes above?

Unionville and Chadds Ford, two communities located in the southeastern end of Pennsylvania, embody all that you’re looking for: a tranquil countryside, panoramic views, an excellent school system, and a rich history.

Two Historic Communities

About Unionville

Unionville lies in Pennsylvania’s southern Chester County, an unincorporated community in East Marlborough Township.

It was originally named Jacksonville because of the prominent Jackson family who lived nearby. John Jackson built a log cabin in 1700, which today is occupied by Catherine’s, a popular local restaurant. Another portion of Jackson’s home was sold to Samuel Entriken who opened the Cross Key Inn. Cross Key Inn provided travelers with food and lodging between the years 1808-1833.

Unionville Village was the center of a flourishing agricultural community from 1759-1900. For the products and services they couldn’t grow or produce on their own, farmers in the area relied on Unionville for supplies. When the village decided to change its name from Jacksonville to Unionville in the early 1800s, schools, churches, and a small library were eventually established.

Some of the structures dating back to Unionville’s early days still stand today and serve as homes for many local residents. Because of its importance as a 19th-century rural village, Unionville was included in the National Register of Historic Places.

About Chadds Ford Township

Chadds Ford Township, just 25 miles west of Philadelphia, lies along the banks of the Brandywine Creek. Rolling hills, sprawling vineyards, and gorgeous natural beauty surround the community. Just four years ago, Chadds Ford changed its name from Birmingham Township to distinguish itself from a municipality with the same name.

The community values its history, preserving important historical buildings, museums, and artifacts. The area in Chadds Ford where the bloody Battle of Brandywine occurred during the American Revolution is now under a preservation plan. Annual events like Chadds Ford Days commemorate the region’s history with a fun colonial festival featuring participants in historical costumes, bluegrass music, house tours, and children’s activities. The town is also home to the famous Wyeth family of artists and their extensive catalogue is on exhibition at the Brandywine River Museum of Art.

Another popular destination in the township is Chaddsford Winery located in a fairy tale-like 17th-century barn between Longwood Gardens and Brandywine River Museum. A hallmark of the community, Chaddsford Winery is regarded as a pioneer in the Pennsylvania wine industry.
